PLENARY/PANEL

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: ANAND KRISHNA
Sjaki-Tari-Us, 14 November 2009; 09.00 - 10.00

Meditation is not merely a concentration. Basically, concentration will make you restless because concentration is only a step toward meditation. Silent sitting for several minutes or hours is not meditation. Meditation has the same meaning with expansion of consciousness. The final result of meditation is samadhi or genuinely balance. After attaining self-balance, you will be restless no more, worry no more, fear no more, and anxious no more. Actually, we just begin to live after this self-balance attained.

Anand Krishna was born in Solo, Central Java, on the 1st of September 1956. He earned his Master degree form a recognized university. He was at the top of his career as a Director and Shareholder of a Garment Factory in Indonesia, when he faced almost certain death by Leukemia at a critical stage, in 1991. After months of suffering and a mysterious meeting with a Tibetan lama in the Himalayas, Anand Krishna experienced a miraculous recovery from his illness. At that moment in time, Anand decided to devote his life to share his joy, peace, love, healing and meditation. He defines meditation as the flavor of life and daily living. His spirituality covers as aspects of life. He was the one who first popularized ‘meditation as a way of life’ when the word ‘meditation’ itself was not popular yet in Indonesia. Anand has appeared on major nation media outlets, both in prints and electronic. He has a weekly column in one of the major print Medias, and a monthly TV as well as Radio Shows – all on the island of Bali. He also writes regularly for several other Medias nationwide. However, his most outstanding contribution and legacy are the 130 over books published within last 12 years with more than half million copies sold all over Indonesia.

For him, only through meditation a higher consciousness — a consciousness necessary to resolve social, economical and political problems in Indonesia — can be realized. This is meditation as the way of life.

Meditation towards a Happy Life by L.K. Suryani

Meditation is one way towards happiness (ananda). It makes you confident and relaxed; able to do all activities and solve any problems. Your peacefulness and happiness will spread to the people and the environment around you. Your love will light the love within their heart, calm their heart, and inspire their empathy to others. Do whatever you want to do with your heart. Only your hearts know the truth. If you know yourself, you will realize that your experience is the best teacher besides God.

Prof. Dr. dr. Luh Ketut Suryani is a psychiatrist. She has learned about meditation since she was 14 years old. She was encouraged to learn mediation for curing her mother. Until then, she has practiced meditation and developed new methods of meditation combined with her medical and psychiatric background. PANEL 4: AMINA WADUD & MARGOT ANAND
Sjaki-Tari-Us, 15 November 2009; 11.00 - 12.30

Remembrance as a spiritual exercise: Zhikr by Amina Wadud

The word Zhikr comes from the Arabic root form zh-k-r which means to remember, or to repeat.  By a simple or elaborate form of verbal repetitions, Muslims augment their five times daily prayer with the practice of zhikr.  Most often they repeat the ninety-nine names or attributes of God, al-asmaa al-husnaa.  The basic idea is to evoke a state of remembrance, which according to the Qur’an is the best.  For the sufis, the mystics across Islamic history and through-out its vast cultures,  zhikr has been performed from the simple repetitions to more elaborate musical forms with various wood and wind instruments, but mostly with the voice.

She will discuss the development, forms of practice, and benefits of zhikr as supererogatory worship in Islam.  In addition, she will introduce the attendances to some of this practice in simple exercises as well as share in a listening exercise some of its more elaborate forms as they have been practiced among the sufis.

Amina Wadud was born September 25, 1952 in Bethesda, Maryland. Her father was a Methodist minister and her mother descended from Muslim slaves of Arab, Berber and African ancestry dating back to the 8th Century. She is a controversial Islamic feminist and scholar. She is currently a visiting professor at the Center for Religious and Cross Cultural Studies at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta,Indonesia. She achieved Full Professor of Islamic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia, in 2007. She is the author of Qur’an and Woman: Rereading the Sacred Text from a Woman’s Perspective and Inside the Gender Jihad: Women’s Reform in Islam. She spoke at universities, grass roots level, government and non-government forums at various gatherings throughout the United States, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe.
